It's interesting that before the strong storm in January 2005, the length of the cliffs was much smaller - just 160 metres. Also the birch tree (in the first photo) has became iconic - it stands on the edge of the cliff already at least 10 years, just the angle has became much slopier - from some 10 degrees back in 2008 to about 45 degrees in 2018.

These unusual sandstone archs are the only such formations in Latvia (the other ones have collapsed during time), they're presumably more than 6000 years old. Next to the arcade there is also a 23 metres long cave and a natural spring.

Lielā Ellīte could be formed around 6,5-7 thousand years ago. The cave and the spring were once an important holy places. Spring has created unique rock formation. Groundwater is collected over a watertight, flat clay basin, and then flows through layers of sandstone that filters and purifies water.

The cliffs has also an interesting layering (the streaks of iron can be found here) and fossilies of fish, as well as a cracks, formed there by tectonic processes long time ago.

It's not clear why the cliffs are named Eagle cliffs because eagles hasn't been noticed there. The legends say that echoes from these cliffs sounded like an organ, so it is also known as the Ērģeļu (Organ) Cliffs. It's speculated that the name "Ērgļu" is just derived from "Ērģeļu" as it is phonetically similar in Latvian language.

- Sietiniezis height doesn't reach above 15 metres. Sietiniezis has beautiful, white color - it consists of quartz sand (one of the theories are, that they are formed in time when there was a tropical weather conditions in Latvia). The cliff is interesting also with the small holes in it made by the bees - thus also it's name (in Latvian it means "the cliff of strainer"). There is built a tourist path alongside the cliff which allows rather easy access to it.

West coast of Latvia boasts with beautiful seashore bluff which stretches for several tens of kilometers. The sandy coasts have made bluffs up to 20 metres high, and they are constantly washed out by sea which occupies more and more of land every year. This is ideal area for hiking, as well as calmful relaxation at the sea (in contrary to popular beaches of Jurmala, Liepaja, Saulkrasti, etc., these areas are usually empty of people).

Rauna Staburags Travertine cliff in autumn

Rauna Staburags travertine cliff seems to be unique nature monument in whole Baltic states - there isn't information about any other similar places from Latvia, Lithuania or Estonia. The cliff has started to form some 9000 years ago, the moss is limed by calcium-rich spring water, the process still continues. The cliff is 3,5 metres high and 17 metres in length.

Last of it's kind

There has been larger and more impressive cliffs of this type in Latvia but they were destroyed by the economic activities. Most notable was Staburags on Daugava river. Daugavas Staburags was flooded when Pļaviņas hydro electric power station was built.

Tourism impact

Rauna travertine cliff is also one of the most endangered nature monuments in Latvia, because tourists tend to step on the cliff itself. Because of this, the Alpine butterwort (which was also pretty unique for Baltic's flora) has already been extinguished from here - this flower hasn't been spotted for the last 15 years.

In 2018, Rauna Staburags cliff was chosen as the "Geoplace of Latvia" for the specific year.

It's also one of the newest cliff in Latvia, because the first testimonies about it appeared only in 1950ies - before that, Dzilnas cliff wasn't mentioned in any sources, although Amata river valley was well explored and documented in a book already in 1930ies.

Dzilnas cliff is rapidly changing due to active processes of erosion and suffosion. Nowadays they seem to be stopped, and the cliff is overgrowing with vegetation - so soon there could be only a "green blanket" as it has happened with many other Latvian cliffs and outcrops.
